SEAT BELT FAILURES

Although the purpose of a seat belt is to protect a vehicle occupant in a collision, sometimes the design of a seat belt is poor or inadequate, and the seat belt's failure can result in a serious injury or death that would not have occurred had the seat belt been effective. There are a surprising number of different seat belt designs used in the hundreds of vehicle models available in the U.S. today; some of the designs are good, and some are bad.

 

Many Possible Causes
A frequent cause of seat belt failure is the "lap belt only" design  — a simple rear-end collision can seriously injure or kill a passenger wearing only a lap belt, because he or she may slide upward and back in the vehicle. Another common cause of injuries due to seat belt failure is when a passenger "submarines" forward and down, incurring a spinal cord or neck injury that can be devastating, even fatal. Other seat belt problems involve:

  • door-mounted and other automatic belt systems
  • unlatching and false latching
  • poor seat belt geometry
  • retractor failure
  • torn or ripped webbing
  • vehicle system failure
