PERSONAL WATERCRAFT ACCIDENTS

The term "personal watercraft" is essentially synonymous with "jet-skis," a term that is not used generically because it is a brand name. Accidents involving personal watercraft (PWC) are becoming more and more common, as PWCs become widely available and as  manufacturers compete to provide the fastest PWCs with the greatest horsepower. Some current PWC models have three times the horsepower of the original Jet Ski, and several models can go more than 60 miles per hour.

The Most Dangerous Craft on the Water
Unfortunately, the concern for the safety of PWC riders has not kept up with the growth of the industry. PWCs are considered the most dangerous craft on the water, accounting for about 40% of all boating accidents, even though they represent less than 8% of the watercraft in the U.S. In addition, most PWC accidents involve 12- to 21-year-olds.

Design Defects, Inadequate Warnings
Inexperience is definitely a factor in many PWC accidents, but design defects are also a common cause. Potential design defects include:

  • Lack of off-throttle steering
  • Lack of brakes, or inadequate brakes
  • Excessive speed capability
  • Insufficient warnings and instructions
