ATV ACCIDENTS

Accidents involving all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are on the rise in the U.S. as more and more people buy their own ATVs for recreational use, and as more and more children under 16 years of age are riding ATVs. The people who make and sell ATVs do not always make clear the dangers of ATV riding, and sometimes the ATVs themselves malfunction or do not work properly under different conditions.

Spinal Cord, Neck, and Brain Injuries
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), 200 people died in ATV accidents in 1995; in 2005, the number of ATV-related deaths had more than doubled, to 467 fatalities. The same year, some 136,000 adults and children were treated in emergency rooms throughout the U.S. for ATV injuries.

Children on ATVs
Many ER physicians feel that no child under 16 should ever be riding an ATV. Children are not big enough to control an ATV, and they do not always have the judgment to follow safety rules such as "no passengers," "mandatory helmet," and "riding only on approved trails." The injuries of children using ATVs have included skull fractures, permanent brain damage, and spinal cord injuries.
