St. Jude Medical Silzone Hear

St. Jude Medical's Silzone-coated mechanical heart valves and annuloplasty rings were sold around the world until it was found that the Silzone products present a risk of both paravalvular leaks (PVLs), or a flow of blood around the mechanical valve, and blood clotting where the valve is attached. A PVL can cause heart failure, and a blood clot can cause thrombosis and stroke. St. Jude Medical recalled all of its not-yet-implanted Silzone-coated devices in January of 2000, but more than 10,000 Silzone-coated devices had already been implanted in patients in the U.S. by that point.
