Seroquel is an antipsychotic medication used to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It has also been used by physicians as an "off-label" treatment for conditions as varied as alcoholism, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, restless leg syndrome, and sleep disorders.
Despite its uses, Seroquel has been linked to an increased risk of diabetes, hyperglycemia, pancreatitis, and several other serious disorders. In 2003, the Food and Drug Administration recommended that AstraZeneca, the maker of Seroquel, add a warning statement about the risks of diabetes and hyperglycemia to the drug’s label. For some, however, the warning was too late.
