Prempro is a prescription medication used for hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The drug is a combination of estrogen and progestin that was approved by the FDA in 1995 for the relief of osteoporosis, hot flashes, and other symptoms of menopause. However, a large-scale study called the Women's Health Initiative found that Prempro and several other HRT drugs increase the risk of heart disease, heart attacks, blood clots and breast cancer. Prempro is made by Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, and it is still used by millions of women.
