Certain models of Medtronic implantable defibrillators have a battery-shorting problem that can result in a failure to function—a problem that could have a potentially fatal outcome. Medtronic notified healthcare providers about the battery-shorting problem in early 2005, citing devices that were made in 2001 to 2003. Although medical devices are tested before they are released to the market, this defibrillator battery issue illustrates the pressure on medical device companies to get their products on the market as quickly as possible, often at the cost of the consumer.
