Multi-District Litigation (MDL)
Multi-district litigation refers to a legal action taken in the federal (U.S.) court system for civil cases involving the same basic issue. The cases are brought together and transferred into one district court to be heard by the same federal judge.
Examples of legal issues that are often the subject of multi-district litigation are defective drugs and medical products, airplane crashes, and investment fraud. The plaintiffs (the injured parties) may be from all over the U.S., but their cases will all be tried in one place. This helps move the legal process along and makes the judging of the cases more consistent.
Not the Same as Class Action
Multi-district litigation (MDL) is not the same as a class action, where plaintiffs join together is a single lawsuit. Many separate lawsuits constitute a single instance of MDL. However, MDL may include class actions. Over the nearly 40 years since MDL became an option in the U.S., more than 800 instances of MDL have been handled, involving more that 150,000 lawsuits.
