Gadolinium contrast dye is used to help improve the visibility of MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and MRA (magnetic resonance angiography). Recently, gadolinium-based contrast agents were linked to a severe and life-threatening disease called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF). The condition is extremely rare and is marked by such symptoms as tightening and swelling of the skin, muscle and joint contracture, and other potentially life-threatening complications. The symptoms of NSF may appear within a few days or many months of undergoing an MRI or MRI with a gadolinium-based contrast dye.
