During the late 1970s and the 1980s, thousands of people with hemophilia were given the "anti-hemophilic" products Factor VIII or Factor IX ─ blood products from plasma that turned out to be infected with HIV and/or Hepatitis C (HCV). Three of the companies that manufactured and sold these blood products apparently recruited the plasma donors from high-risk populations without properly screening them, and then sold the blood products in the U.S. and overseas even after they were known to be contaminated. Many of the patients who received Factor VIII or IX have since died of AIDS or HCV, and many more are suffering needlessly from these diseases.
