Celexa and Lexapro are two similar FDA-approved prescription medications for treating depression. Both drugs belong to a class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and both have been linked to a number of serious side effects.
Celexa use has been linked to severe birth defects, including PPHN (persistent pulmonary hypertension) and heart, abdominal, and cranial defects, and Lexapro use has been implicated in several suicides. Both Lexapro and Celexa, as well as other drugs in the same class, are now required to carry warnings regarding the risks of suicidal behaviors and birth defects.
