Bextra and Celebrex, like Vioxx, are prescription anti-inflammatory drugs. Each was FDA-approved for treating pain due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, menstruation, and various other conditions, and both drugs are made by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer.
In 2005—in the wake of the Vioxx scandal—Bextra was withdrawn from the U.S. market. The action came after the drug was linked to an increased risk of heart attack or stroke, as well as an increased risk of a severe, life-threatening skin reaction. Celebrex is still on the market but now carries an FDA-required “black box warning” about its cardiovascular and other risks. Pfizer is facing massive litigation based on allegations that it did not adequately test each drug or reveal their risks.
