Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu with Moisture Loc contact lens solution was voluntarily withdrawn from the U.S. market in 2006 after its use was linked to more than 100 cases of a serious fungal eye infection. The infection, called Fusarium keratitis, is rare but can cause permanent loss of sight.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned consumers of the risk of possible Fusarium infection, but the warning came too late for some — a number of ReNu with Moisture Loc users have already experienced a loss of vision severe enough to require a corneal transplant.
