Avandia, the prescription drug used to treat millions of patients with Type 2 diabetes, has been linked to significant risks including life-threatening heart failure, heart attack, and stroke. GlaxoSmithKline, the maker of Avandia, knew about these risks as early as 2005, but the FDA did not issue a safety alert about the risks until 2007, following the publication of a meta-study of 28,000 Avandia patients. The study revealed that Avandia treatment doubled the risk of heart failure and increased the risk of heart attack by 42%. Despite these the risks, Avandia remains on the market.
