Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) is an ingredient used in some over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription nasal decongestants, cough and cold products, and appetite suppressants. PPA has been linked to an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke (i.e., bleeding in the brain), particularly in women.
In 2000, the Food and Drug Administration issued a Public Health Advisory warning consumers about the risks associated with PPA and also asked drug companies to stop marketing PPA-containing products. Since then, OTC products containing PPA have been completely removed from the U.S. market, but countless consumers had already suffered serious adverse health effects.
